Mentoring Someone

Definition

Say it out loud in an interview — clear, simple, no textbook wording.

"Tell me about a time you mentored or coached someone" tests whether you can grow another person on purpose. Helping once is kindness. Mentoring is a system with a goal, a cadence, and an end state.

Interviewers score three things. Did you set a goal with the person, not for them. Did you give them work that stretched them, with real review. And did they end up independent, not dependent on you.

The trap is the effort story. "I spent hours helping him every week" measures your time, not their growth. If the person still needs you at the end of the story, the mentoring failed, however kind it was.
