Handling a Disagreement

Definition

Say it out loud in an interview — clear, simple, no textbook wording.

"Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague" tests whether you can fight for a good idea without damaging the relationship. Every senior hire gets asked some version of this, because senior work is mostly disagreements handled well.

Interviewers score three things. Did you disagree about the work, with reasons, rather than about the person. Did you bring evidence instead of louder opinions. And did you commit to the decision once it was made, even if you lost.

The trap is the story where you win by being right. "I proved them wrong and we did it my way" tells the panel you will be hard to work with. The best version often ends with a compromise, or with you losing gracefully.
