When Something You Shipped Went Wrong
hardComplete guide with examples and interview questions · 15 min
Say it out loud in an interview — clear, simple, no textbook wording.
"Tell me about a time something you shipped went wrong" is the question senior panels trust most, because everyone has a story and the bad ones are easy to spot. It tests ownership under embarrassment.
Interviewers score four things, in order. Did you own it quickly. Did you fix it before explaining it. Did you find the real cause. And did you change the system so it cannot happen the same way again.
The trap is the story with no owner. "The code had a bug" or "QA missed it" or "the browser was old" all move blame somewhere else. Panels hear blame-shifting instantly, and it is the fastest way to fail a behavioural round.
Key takeaways
- •Own it fast, fix it first, explain it second
- •Never blame the reviewer, the tool, or the user
- •Show the systemic fix, not just the apology
- •Say what you check now that you did not check then
